Compare the properties of the matrix that makes up cartilage versus the matrix that makes up bone. What imbues the matrix of bone with these properties?
Bone is also a specialized form of dense connective tissue. Like cartilage, the matrix of bone contains very few bone cells. Unlike cartilage, the matrix of bone is hard, rigid, and brittle. Containing collagenous fibers and water, the matrix of bone is impregnated with such organic salts as calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate. These salts often constitute up to 65 percent of the dry weight of the bones of an adult.
